What's an enterprise anyway

Ideas No Comments »

There are tons of definitions of enterprise but few agree on what one really is. Even enterprise architects talk about the concept in fuzzy terms. Not that I’m going to set that straight but here’s an attempt to understand what it is. We define the enterprise based on a why, who, what, how, where, and when.

Why Enterprise Is Better Than You Remember

Today’s Lost and Found brings us back to the beloved franchise Star Trek with my thoughts on the last remnants of your father’s Trek, Enterprise! Enterprise was, well, as I say, a weird show. It sometimes was a bit too cool for its own good but it still felt like Star Trek. It’s an entertaining space adventure akin to what we have seen from Deep Space Nine or Voyager. It has grown a fanbase thanks to its characters and at times, fantastic writing.

What did you think of Enterprise? Be sure to let me know down in the comments below!

Enterprise software, also known as enterprise application software (EAS), is computer software used to satisfy the needs of an organization rather than individual users. Such organizations would include businesses, schools, interest-based user groups, clubs, charities, or governments. Enterprise software is an integral part of a (computer-based) information system.

Services provided by enterprise software are typically business-oriented tools such as online shopping and online payment processing, interactive product catalogue, automated billing systems, security, enterprise content management, IT service management, customer relationship management, enterprise resource planning, business intelligence, project management, collaboration, human resource management, manufacturing, occupational health and safety, enterprise application integration, and enterprise forms automation.

As enterprises have similar departments and systems in common, enterprise software is often available as a suite of customizable programs. Generally, the complexity of these tools requires specialist capabilities and specific knowledge.

Enterprise Software describes a collection of computer programs with common business applications, tools for modeling how the entire organization works, and development tools for building applications unique to the organization. The software is intended to solve an enterprise-wide problem, rather than a departmental problem. Enterprise level software aims to improve the enterprise’s productivity and efficiency by providing business logic support functionality.

According to Martin Fowler, “Enterprise applications are about the display, manipulation, and storage of large amounts of often complex data and the support or automation of business processes with that data.”

Although there is no single, widely accepted list of enterprise software characteristics, they generally include performance, scalability, and robustness. Furthermore, enterprise software typically has interfaces to other enterprise software (for example LDAP to directory services) and is centrally managed (a single admin page, for example).

Enterprise application software performs business functions such as order processing, procurement, production scheduling, customer information management, energy management, and accounting. It is typically hosted on servers and provides simultaneous services to a large number of users, typically over a computer network. This is in contrast to a single-user application that is executed on a user’s personal computer and serves only one user at a time.

Enterprise software can be categorized by business function. Each type of enterprise application can be considered a “system” due to the integration with a firm’s business processes. Categories of enterprise software may overlap due to this systemic interpretation. For example, IBM’s Business Intelligence platform (Cognos), integrates with a predictive analytics platform (SPSS) and can obtain records from its database packages (Infosphere, DB2). Blurred lines between package functions make delimitation difficult, and in many ways larger software companies define these somewhat arbitrary categories.

Business Studies – Enterprise & Entrepreneurship: Business Exam Tips

Ideas No Comments »

Get Unlimited Access to GCSE Tutor Videos & Online Revision Here for £19.99: http://www.revisionapp.co.uk/product/online-gcse-revision. When thinking about enterprise and entrepreneurship the two key words you need to remember are risk and initiative.

In business every transaction carries an element of risk. There is always something that could go wrong. The person who takes the risk is the person who is using their initiative. It takes a certain kind of person to be bold and make the decision to take the risk. These people are the entrepreneurs. So, enterprise is the skill of risk taking, using initiative and undertaking new ventures and entrepreneurs are the people who assume the risk for a business venture and make it happen. The trick here is to take calculated risks, and to ensure that the potential return from taking a risk are enough to make the gamble worthwhile.
When an entrepreneur is considering setting up a business they need to ask themselves some questions. These may be, ” Is my idea realistic? Can I accept the personal challenges and sacrifices that I may have to make? Can I afford to fail?” And one of the most important questions, “Do I have a the right qualities and skills to start a business?”
You shouldn’t attempt to run a business if you don’t posses the important enterprise skills. Skills such as planning, leadership and decision making are key to business success.

Planning is probably the most essential skill here. An entrepreneur needs to be able to put together a realistic and detailed business plan. It is the road map to wherever the business goes. It enables them to have anticipate the future successes and the problems and gives an honest view on the risks the business may face.

Another skill that is essential for any budding entrepreneur to possess is leadership. The world of business is quite often dog eat dog and in order to survive you must be seen to be leading from the front. A good leader will have amazing judgement as well as being persuasive and decisive. They need to be able to convince others, whether thats investors or employees, to have faith in them and their business to deliver.

With all the faith invested in them, this leaves little room for an entrepreneur to be decisive. They will often make decisions based on gut feeling without all of the complete information and many entrepreneurs consider this a gift. However, its really important to be able to recognise when things are going pear shaped and act as quickly as possible. Typically entrepreneurs are working alone. There is no time in the world of an entrepreneur for committee meetings!
They typical personality traits of an entrepreneur may include energy, drive, resilience and most importantly, vision. Entrepreneurs are the big picture thinkers!
